Una de las contribuciones más destacadas de Butler es su teoría performativa del sexo y la sexualidad. Tradicionalmente, el construccionismo social ya nos hablaba de la construcción del género, es decir, que las categorías femenino y masculino, o lo que es lo mismo, los roles de género son constructos sociales y no roles naturales. Pero Butler sobrepasa el género y afirma que el sexo y la sexualidad lejos de ser algo natural son, como el género, algo construido.

La obra de esta teórica, por tanto, se caracteriza por llevar a cabo revisiones críticas de los posicionamientos teóricos de los feminismos esencialistas para pasar a hablar de identidades nómadas frente a aquellas fijas, así como para plantear nuevas formas de habitabilidad de los cuerpos en la paradoja que se crea entre lo que es la capacidad de acción del individuo y su formación y dependencia con respecto al poder. Lo que Butler, en definitiva, se propone, es la desnaturalización de conceptos como el sexo, el género y el deseo, en tanto que son construcciones culturales de normas que violentan a aquellos sujetos que no participan de las mismas. Para subvertir los conceptos que oprimen al individuo, se propone, como opción, la creación de actos performativos en torno a la identidad, es decir, una serie de prácticas paródicas en base a su teoría performativa que acaban creando nuevos significados y se reproducen más allá de cualquier sistema binario.
